John Grosvenor: Definitely time to alter law on Human Rights

This week’s Queen’s Speech is to include plans for amending the Human Rights Act, which is being abused by many undesirables so they can remain in this country,

The latest example concerns two foreign criminals who have been allowed to stay here because of their ‘right to a family life’ despite the fact they may pose a risk to the rights of others.

It is no good blaming the judges who make these decisions; they are merely acting on the law as passed by parliament, so it is up to politicians to change that legislation and that should be done sooner rather than later.

Talking of judges, it is refreshing to read about the candour of one who has admitted he was wrong to give a burglar another chance.

Judge Scott Wolstenholme has rapped his own knuckles for imposing a community order on an 18 year old who a fortnight later broke into a n 87 year old’s home.

The judge said he had not done his public duty by sparing the teenager. Perhaps he should sentence himself to a day’s imprisonment for his mistake.

BANK Holidays usually turn out to be blank ones, so far as the weather is concerned. So Monday’s proved a welcome change.

The glorious burst of warm sunshine was just what was needed to lift our spirits. Of late there has not been much to cheer about so it was left to Mother Nature to come to the rescue.

Particularly grateful for her intervention were the green-fingered community who have been in a state of limbo for the past few months, desperate for signs of re-awakening in their gardens.

They have come at last and the whirring of lawn mowers is heard once again in our land. The sun is streaming through the windows as I write this on Monday. Fingers crossed it still is when this appears in print.

CONGRATULATIONS to the Cobblers on reaching the League Two play-off finals at Wembley, although their opponents, Bradford, will be a tough nut to crack .

The club enjoyed mixed fortunes in its two visits to the old Wembley.

In 1997 they beat Swansea 1 – 0 and the following year lost by a similar margin to Grimsby. Ironically the Welsh club has had the last laugh.

It is now among the big boys in the Premiership while Grimsby have dropped out of the league and are now in the Conference. Perhaps one day Northampton will join the elite. Don’t laugh, miracles sometimes happen.
