A motorist has been handed a suspended prison sentence for causing the death by careless driving of a student from the University of Northampton.

Gemma Stanley, aged 19, was killed in a crash on the A361 at Ashby St Ledgers in June last year, when a Ford Focus she was a passenger in collided with a Range Rover travelling in the opposite direction.

Miss Stanley, from Coventry, died at the scene of the crash.

She had been studying for a degree in Early Childhood Studies and had just completed her first year of the three-year course.

She lived in halls of residence at the university’s Park Campus.

The driver of the Focus, Neil Murray, aged 24, of Ashlawn Road, Rugby, admitted causing death by careless driving at Northampton Crown Court last month.

The court heard Murray was not under the influence of drink or drugs, and was not using his mobile phone.

He was sentenced to eight months in prison at Northampton Crown Court on Friday, suspended for 24 months.

Judge Sylvia De Bertodano disqualified him from driving for three years. She ordered Murray to take an extended test before he is allowed back on the roads.
