A cabinet reshuffle has been announced by the leader of Northampton Borough Council.

Councillor David Mackintosh has revealed that Councillor Mary Markham will become deputy leader, in addition to her position as cabinet member for housing.

Councillor Mike Hallam will become cabinet member for environment, which includes licensing issues and carbon management as well as environmental services and environmental health.

These moves are prompted by Councillor John Caswell, current deputy leader, becoming deputy mayor later this week.

Councillor Mackintosh said: “Over the last two years we have achieved some great things for Northampton and we are at last seeing our town change for the better. These appointments mean the right people are in place to help me continue to push things forward and put Northampton back on track.”

There are also two changes to the cabinet assistant roles, with Councillor Brian Oldham becoming assistant cabinet member for environment and Councillor Matt Lynch becoming assistant cabinet member for housing.

The rest of the cabinet remains unchanged, Councillor Tim Hadland will continue as the council’s portfolio holder for Regeneration and Enterprise, which includes planning matters, Councillor Alan Bottwood will continue as the council’s portfolio holder for finance, Councillor Brandon Eldred continues as cabinet member with responsibility for community engagement and Councillor Jonathan Nunn is assistant cabinet member for regeneration and enterprise and Councillor Anna King is assistant cabinet member for community engagement.

There are also some changes to the chairing of council committees and the line-up is now licensing (Councillor Christopher Malpas), planning (Councillor Penny Flavell), general purposes (Councillor Stephen Hibbert), audit (Councillor Phil Larratt), overview and scrutiny (Councillor Jamie Lane), appointments and appeals (Councillor David Mackintosh), standards (Councillor John Yates) and community fund advisory panel (CFAP) (Councillor Ifty Choudary).
