A town centre pub dating back to the 19th century, which only reopened three years ago, has been voted the best in the county by ale lovers.

The Wig and Pen, in St Giles Street, Northampton, has been voted ‘Pub of the Year 2012-13’ by members of
Northants CAMRA.

Landlord Richard Gordon was presented with his award on Monday by CAMRA branch chairman, Phil Greenway.

Mr Gordon and his team re-opened the mothballed venue on April 22, 2010, and it is now one of the most popular pubs in the town centre.

He said: “Obviously everyone is thrilled to bits. A lot of blood, sweat and tears has gone into this over the last three years and it is nice to be recognised.

“We are also in the top 150 real ale pubs in the country, which is quite an achievement.

“It was derelict when we took it on and it’s almost three years to the day that it opened.”

Mr Greenway said: “Richard and the team’s commitment to cask ale is the starting point for us, backed up by great service and an eclectic menu.

“Alongside well-known national and regional brands, Richard always has a great selection of ales from Northamptonshire’s growing band of small brewers.”
