The 773rd Mayor of Northampton has been sworn into office during a ceremony at the Guildhall.
Councillor Les Marriott (Lab, Semilong) took on the chains of office during a ceremony on Thursday morning.
Accepting the position, he pledged he would use his year as Mayor to promote Northampton.
He said: “I’m truly honoured to become the Mayor of Northampton, and I will do my best to bring the Mayoralty closer to the people and businesses of Northampton.
“I will carry out the role to the very best of my ability because Northampton is a great town and I believe it has some great days to come.”
The Mayor, who was born in Yardley Hastings, was first elected to Northampton Borough Council in 1995.
He has worked for BT for more than 40 years and is an active trade unionist.
During his time in office, the Mayor will use his civic role to raise money for The Caring and Sharing Trust, a charity for people with learning disabilities.
The outgoing Mayor, Councillor Roger Conroy (Lib Dem, Kings Heath) raised more than £9,000 for charity during his year in office and attended more than 500 events.
He said: “It’s been a great honour to be Mayor of Northampton, I’ve enjoyed every single minute.
“It’s been a very special year.”
Unlike some other towns and cities in the country, the Mayoralty of Northampton is a purely civic role with no real powers.
