Police have arrested more than 40 people in the first 10 days of a summer clampdown on drink drivers in Northamptonshire.

The summer road operation started at the beginning of the month and has already resulted in 44 people being arrested, Northamptonshire Police said this afternoon.

Of those, 21 were arrested in the first four days of the campaign, while an additional people 23 were arrested between June 5 and 10.

The figure is 11 more than were arrested than in the same 10-day period last year.

The campaign began on Saturday, June 1, and will continue until Sunday, June 30.

Superintendent Andy Cox, head of Specialist Operations, said: “This campaign demonstrates our commitment to making the county’s roads safer. The message is clear – if you get behind the wheel whilst under the influence of drink or drugs you will be taken off the road.”
