Fans advised to stay behind after British Grand Prix to ease pressure on roads

Police are advising Formula One fans to enjoy the post-race entertainment at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, to help ease the pressure on the county’s roads.

Several of the drivers will be attending the traditional Grand Prix Party event on the stage on the circuit’s infield, along with musicians Alistair Griffin and Joseph Whelan, on Sunday, June 30.

Traffic managers are hoping a staggered departure will help stem the flow of traffic heading onto the A43 immediately after the race, which last year was attended by 127,000 people.

Ian Ledingham, the police’s traffic manager for the British Grand Prix, said: “The fact that Silverstone now provides entertainment into the evening, beyond the conclusion of the Grand Prix, has been beneficial to the circuit’s traffic plan which we support.

“We want everyone to get away as quickly and safely as possible and a staggered departure really does help.

“While there hasn’t been the congestion of ten or so years ago, motorists still need to be realistic.

“As at any large event or gathering, when a large volume of traffic looks to use a limited amount of road space, delays are inevitable.

“But providing motorists pay close attention to the signage, and follow given instructions, it should not be long before they are on their way.”
