Former Northamptonshire captain Geoff Cook has regained consciousness in hospital following the heart attack he suffered last week.

The 61-year-old was found outside Durham’s Chester-le-Street ground last Thursday having collapsed while out running.

He has been in a coma in hospital ever since.

However, a statement released by the club today offers promising news.

It reads: “Durham County Cricket Club is delighted to confirm that Geoff Cook has recovered consciousness and is now making steady progress in hospital.

“His family have asked us to thank all of the very many people whose messages of support have given such encouragement.”
