Seventy-eight people have now been arrested as part of a summer blitz on drink drivers, Northamptonshire Police said today.

The arrests have all been made as part of the month-long crackdown, running throughout June, with 16 people arrested over the past seven days.

The annual campaign began on Saturday, June 1, and will finish on Sunday, June 30.

Superintendent Andy Cox, head of force operations, said: “The consequences of deciding to drink and drive can be devastating. Anybody who hurts an innocent person on the roads because of their reckless actions will have to live with it for the rest of their lives.

“Other consequences are a criminal record which will affect job prospects, a driving ban, a hefty fine and an endorsement which stays on a licence for 11 years. Our commitment to keeping people safe on the roads will be relentless, and tackling drink drivers will continue for the rest of the year.”

Across Northamptonshire, an increased number of breath tests are being carried out, with an emphasis on daytime testing.
