A Formula 1 driver was pulled over for speeding through Silverstone ahead of the British Grand Prix, police have confirmed.
Commenting on Twitter on Thursday night, an officer from Northamptonshire Police said: “We just pulled over a car for speeding through Silverstone, turns out to be an F1 driver.”
The car was stopped at about 10pm.
The police have not confirmed who the driver was, but it is not believed that he was one of the main championship contenders.
A spokesman for the force said: “Officers in an unmarked police car were on patrol on the A43 in the Silverstone area last night when their vehicle was overtaken by a car exceeding the speed limit.
“The driver was stopped and words of advice were given to him and the matter was closed.”
Speaking to the Chron earlier this week, former Formula 1 driver, Johnny Herbert, said it was not unusual for top drivers to be stopped for driving too fast through Silverstone.
The 1995 British Grand Prix winner said he was aware of one world champion who had been arrested in the village for driving too quickly.
