Andy Billson won the Collingtree Captain’s Away Weekend for the second time in three years as he recorded a six-stroke victory in skipper Kevin Parfitt’s tournament in Portugal.
After shooting an opening round of 32 points at Quinta Da Marinha to sit one off the pace, Billson took the lead with a brilliant tally of 37 points over the beautiful Lisbon Sports Club course.
Despite not finding his very best in the closing round at Penha Longa, a solid total of 29 points proved enough to finish ahead of defending champion Brendon Moss.
On a trip which raised almost £1000 for the Captains Charity, last year’s skipper Chris Malton carded a best-of-the-day 36 points to claim third prize.
Back at the club, Brian Jones won round six of the Seniors Stableford Series on countback from Anthony Langley with 36 points, while the Seniors TT Trophy saw a comfortable victory for Allen Johnson (40).
Kingsthorpe
Jake Croxford produced his best ever round off the white tees when it mattered as he fired a one-under-par gross 68 on the second day of the Club Championships to clinch the Arnold Cup.
The three-handicapper, who sat four off the pace after an opening 76, parred the first 10 holes on day two, before birdies at 11, 12 and 16 pushed him four clear of Peter Scott and overnight leader Jason Spence.
The Victory Trophy went to Neil Dunkley after net rounds of 68 and 66 lifted the 17-handicapper a couple of strokes clear of Robin Adams, Scott and two others. Harry Middleton won the Plate Comp with a net 65.
Despite missing out on the prizes in the club champs, Ian Townsend still had plenty to celebrate after grabbing a rare hole-in-one on the par four third hole in a practice round on the eve of the tournament.
Northampton
Helen Brownless won the Colbourne Salvers after shooting a round of net 70. Elizabeth Wilmer (71) was runner-up by three from Margaret Mottram, with Viv Jones taking the second division with a net 75.
Back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th holes from Olwen Hickman helped secure a countback verdict over Lorraine Gilder in the June Stableford after both shot 39 points.
Jean Bulteel completed a gross (94) and net (74) double in the Woodford Cup Final.
Forty three points was the winning score in the third round of the Summer Series as Clifford Prosser finished four ahead of Allen Pardoe.
Cold Ashby
Joe Whitney was one of seven players to pass the 40-point mark in the June Seniors Stableford as he clinched first prize with an excellent tally of 43.
Despite a double bogey on the second hole, the 11-handicapper completed the next 16 holes in two-over-par to beat Gerry McInerney and Terry Malone by a couple of points.
Countback was needed in the nine-hole Wednesday Competition as David Aveyard edged out Charlie McCormick with 21 points.
Northants County
Northants County golf course provided a stern test for the ladies competing in the England Golf Grand Medal Final as just two players managed to beat their handicaps.
Lancashire’s Gina Parish, who plays off 26, claimed the title with a two-under-par net 73 as she nudged one ahead of Rachel Turner of Cheshire.
Silverstone
Robin Briggs carded the leading mark of 40 points in the Saturday Captains Rose Bowl as he finished one ahead of fellow mid-handicapper John Bradley.
Simon Gregory (38) squeezed one ahead of Andy Prideaux in the top division, while Kevin Garner clinched the third section with 36 points.
Bradley was more successful in the Flag Competition as he got the better of David Rolfe, while Richard Bradshaw (41 points) clinched the Sunday Captains Shield by two from Paul Vidler.
Whittlebury
Leigh Denoven fired a superb round of net 62 in the latest 9 O’Clock Club Comp as he won the June Medal by nine strokes.
The 15-handicapper completed his last 10 holes in gross one-under-par to finish well clear of Stuart Wallace and Victor Sheppard, who were second and third respectively.
Hellidon Lakes
Paul Craig was the only man to beat his handicap on Captain’s Day as he compiled an excellent three-over-par gross round.
Three points behind in second position was Richard Barnes (36), with Keith Meadham, Paul King and Michael Canning a further point off the pace.
Overstone Park
Six pars in the last 10 holes helped Graham Mummery edge ahead of Mark Newton in the June Yellow Tee Midweek Stableford after both players carded 43 points.
On a good day for scoring, Alex Whitaker won the top division with 41 points, while Wayne Cockerill (42) finished two ahead of Martin Swan in the lower category.
Staverton
Half a dozen gross pars and 12 bogeys were on the consistent scorecard of Gordon Wilson in the Vets June Stableford as he squeezed one ahead of Graham Jefferies (37).
Forty points was the leading total in the Vets Pairs Open as Bob Chamberlain beat Terry Rawnsley on countback.
Daventry
Craig Wyatt, Neil Carr and Ian Robinson claimed the three divisional prizes in the third round of the Summer Medal.
Two shots was Wyatt’s victory margin in the top section thanks to a net 69, Carr nudged one ahead of Kevin Tarbox (69) in the middle category, while Robinson (69) finished well clear of the other high handicappers.
Cherwell Edge
A couple of points was Lawrence Brickcliffe’s margin of victory in the Seniors BBQ Bowl as he finished clear of Terry Lester and Dan Berry (both 35).
