Brampton Heath’s Dan Wood made it through to Final Qualifying for the Open Championships after finishing joint-second in the Regional Qualifier with a one-under-par 71 at Luffenham Heath GC.

Fellow county pros Nick Soto (Northampton), Adam Chamberlain and Andy Thorpe (both Peterborough Milton) and amateur Ryan Evans (Wellingborough) missed out on the chance to compete for a spot at Muirfield.

Gary Boyd came up short in his bid for a fourth appearance in a major as the former Cherwell Edge pro finished 60th in International Final Qualifying after shooting score of 73 and 74 at Sunningdale.

Brabazon Trophy

Ryan Evans built on his victory in the Berkshire Trophy last week by finishing in a tie for seventh place in the prestigious Brabazon Trophy at Formby GC.

The Wellingborough 26-year-old, who also finished runner-up in the St. Andrew Trophy and fourth in the French Amateur Championships last month, lifted the Scrutton Jug for the lowest aggregate in the two events.

Evans bagged four birdies in an opening score of one-over-par 73, added a second round of 76 to comfortably make the cut, before moving up the leaderboard with a 72 in round three.

The plus-four-handicapper was at his consistent best in a final day 71 as he picked up a couple of strokes on the back nine to finish six adrift of winner Jordan Smith, but just two behind the runners-up spot.

Overstone’s Harry Woan carded five birdies in an opening round of 73, before adding scores of 80, 81 and 87 to finish in 57th place.

Solheim Cup

Northampotnshire’s Charley Hull joined up with Europe’s leading golfers after being invited to take part in a Solheim Cup training session by team captain Lotta Neumann at Colorado GC, USA.

The 17-year-old currently sits ninth in the Solheim Cup rankings despite playing only four points scoring events in her rookie year on the Ladies European Tour.

But after claiming five runners-up prizes in six LET starts this season, Hull is clearly in Neumann’s thoughts with regard to her four captain’s picks even if the youngster doesn’t make the team automatically.

The match between reigning champions Europe and USA takes place on August 16-18.

English Pro Tour

John Chamberlain’s excellent run of results on the English Pro Tour continued as he won the latest event at Alwoodley GC, Yorkshire.

The Cold Ashby pro, who had finished second, first and second in the previous three comps, carded rounds of 71 and 72 to tie with Andy Cheese at the top of the leaderboard, before winning a play-off.
