George Osborne has said he is delighted the Cobblers are going to get an improved football stadium.

The chancellor visited Northampton on Thursday afternoon to meet business leaders from the area and discuss the economy,

But during his time in the town, he also welcomed the fact a new bus station and railway station are currently being built and welcomed the announcement that Northampton Borough Council is going to help expand the Sixfields Stadium.

He said: “Lots of good things are happening in Northampton, thanks to a combination of the local council, the town’s MPs and the national Government.

“We’re seeing it with the regeneration of the town’s railway station and the success of the enterprise zone, which is really exciting.

“I’ve also heard the news about the town’s new bus station and the expansion of the football stadium.

“It’s clear there are some exciting things happening in Northampton.

“It’s a place that’s at the heart of the recovery.”

During his time in the town, the politician visited Hawes signs in Moulton Park, a company which makes signs for some of the biggest firms in the country, including Tesco, Vauxhall and Costa Coffee.

He also toured Nationwide’s head offices and was grilled by staff during a question-and-answer session in the company’s canteen.

During the session, he told staff he was “absolutely against” Britain joining the Euro and discussed the measures being taken by the Government to clamp down on companies who avoid paying tax.

He also said Nationwide had been shown to be “one of the goodies” during the banking crisis and praised other Northamptonshire firms, including Silverstone.

When asked by one member of Nationwide staff what stopped him from sleeping at night however, he side-stepped the issue - insisting the most important thing was “to get some sleep”.

He also said Northampton was well placed for future growth because of its excellent transport links and insisted the controversial HS2 railway line, which will pass through the south of the county, would “help bring the country together”.
