A group of Coventry football fans have staged a protest outside Sixfields against plans for the Sky Blues to play their home games in Northampton for the next three seasons.

Coventry’s owners, Sisu, have been looking for a venue for City’s home games, and it is understood they have signed a deal with the Cobblers to rent Sixfields for their home games in both the league and cup.

At 5pm today, a group of 15 Coventry fans gathered outside the entrance to the Sixfields Stadium and put posters up calling for Coventry to stay at the Ricoh Arena.

Michael Orton, a lifelong Coventry fan said: “Our position is quite clear. It’s absolutely unthinkable for us to play outside the city where we were founded and that will always be our home.

“We’ll fight this every step of the way. Our priority is to make sure Coventry City stay in Coventry.”

Mr Orton has appealed to Cobblers fans to support them in their dispute with their owners as he believes it is an issue which could affect many other football clubs.

He said: “We know the problems of football clubs being turned into franchise like Wimbledon and we want to campaign with local fans to make their views known to David Cardoza.

“We feel this is Northampton’s ground and the fans should fight to keep it that way.”

Steve Brown, a Coventry season ticket holder for 38 years, said all the fans he had spoken to would refuse to come to watch the team at Sixfields.

He said: “There’s no way I will come and give money to these owners.”

Coventry fan Kevin Read, who lives in West Hunsbury, near to Sixfields, said he would also not attend any Sky Blues games at the stadium.

He said: “It should be a dream to have Coventry playing round the corner, but there’s no way I’ll go to any of their games at Sixfields.”
