Every day this month the Chron will be teaming up with the Northampton Town Centre Business Improvement District (BID) to feature a ‘Business of the Day’ – giving you more information about an independent firm in the town.
Today, we highlight Felix Yu in Castilian Street
When Felix Yu was a 13-year-old boy growing up in Hong Kong, he found himself working in the kitchens of a local restaurant as his hard-up family couldn’t afford to send him to school. It was the best education he could have dreamt of.
Decades later he runs one of the most highly-regarded restaurants in Northampton, having also worked in Woburn and London during an illustrious culinary career.
Felix believes in bringing an authentic taste of China to his menu, rather than the more anglicised version favoured by many Oriental chefs.
He said: “I like to source different ingredients which add a new dimension to a dish. I want diners to eat the food that we eat in China and I think they appreciate that. There are dishes on my menu that you won’t find anywhere else.”
Felix has recently changed his menu for the fourth time in five years as he looks to tinker and perfect his ever-evolving selection of almost 80 dishes.
He added: “Northampton is getting better in terms of restaurants, we have some very nice ones now. We opened at the start of the recession and it was tough but we are still here and have a lot of loyal customers. I think being an independent business we can offer so much more knowledge and passion than the bigger chains, and that’s why they keep coming back.”
