Aspiring archaeologists have been invited to help excavate part of Northampton’s medieval castle.

Earlier this year, professional archaeologists found the remains of a building which would have been in the castle’s grounds while they were investigating Northampton railway station’s car park, ahead of the construction of anew station.

Now, the Friends of Northampton Castle have decided to hold a second dig to see if any more of the castle can be found. The latest dig however will be much smaller than that carried out by the professional archaeologists.

It will focus on one small section of a front garden of a house next to the railway station, which belongs to the chairman of the friends group, Dr Marie Dickie.

Her husband, Chron columnist, John Dickie, said anyone with an interest in archaeology was welcome to have a root around during the dig on Saturday.

He said: “We’re only going to do about one square foot of the garden, but we’ll have an expert archaeologist on site to supervise everything that’s done.”

The friends group is also planning a follow-up event on Saturday, July 27 where a similarly small piece of land in front of the Doddridge United Reform Chapel in Doddridge Street will be examined.

Mr Dickie said: “We really want people to come along to help us see if any of the castle can be found.”

The first two digs of the project will be held in the Dickies’ garden in Western View on July 20th with the first beginning at 10am and the second at 2pm.
