Firefighters say the cause of a blaze, which destroyed a Mercedes on the side of a busy road into Northampton at the weekend, is believed to have been a mechanical defect.
A Mercedes estate car went up in flames on the slip-road from the A45 into Northampton, close to the Queen Eleanor interchange, in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The fire also set a section of grass on the nearby embankment on fire, scorching 40 square meters of grass.
A spokesman for Northamptonshire Fire & Rescue this morning said crews were called to the blaze at 3.24am on Saturday and used two hose reels and two breathing apparatus.
One crew from Mereway attended the blaze and extinguished the fire by 3.40am.
