The University of Northampton is ranked as the 18th riskiest of 96 universities in England and Wales - excluding London - for student-relevant crimes, according to a new report.

The report, published by the Complete University Guide, found that of nine East Midlands universities the University of Northampton was ranked as having the second highest incidence of burglary and robbery, and the fifth highest of violent crime.

David Walman, Security Manager at the University of Northampton said: “The figures do not indicate crime on either the university campuses or directly involving students. Incidents of crime involving University of Northampton student victims are thankfully rare.

“The university and the Student Union frequently share crime reduction and personal safety advice with our students.”

The report is compiled from official police data from May 2012 to April 2013. It focuses on the incidence of crimes most relevant to students - burglary, robbery and violent crime - from wards of which parts are within three miles of the main university campus.

The riskiest university listed was the University of Hull, while the safest was Aberystwyth.

Bernard Kingston, founder of The Complete University Guide, said: “Prospective students should be able to assess the risks for individual institutions with much greater precision. In the absence of data for crimes affecting university students specifically, this survey offers the best available guide.

“Our universities do not exist in isolation from the communities within which they are located.”

The study was confined to England and Wales because there is no comparable data for Scotland or Northern Ireland. It also excludes London because of what the compilers called the capital’s “unique” features.
