Today, we highlight J Lawrence Coffee Shop in St Giles Street
Wherever you are in Northampton, the chances are you’re not that far from an Oliver Adams.
The traditional craft bakery has grown enormously, to the extent that it now has 28 retail outlets in Northampton and surrounding areas.
Arguably its flagship store is J Lawrence in St Giles Street, a beautiful double-fronted coffee shop serving a selection of Oliver Adams famous sandwiches, cakes and pastries.
The baking tradition has been passed down through the family line since 1856 when, a virtually penniless 16 year old boy, Thomas Adams walked into Northampton from Flore to learn the baking trade and became a Master Baker.
Lawrence’s retains its own identity and is one of the best-known shops in St Giles Street.
Area manager Jane Matthews said: “Our emphasis is on quality. We use the best quality produce we can find and I think that’s where we stand over and above some of the others. We use fresh meat, not processed, and we take pride in what we do.”
Oliver Adams now operate a large scale bakery in Gladstone Road, Northampton to supply their growing number of shops.
