Police and council investigations into a fatal crush which happened at a Northampton night club two years ago have finally been completed.

The Lava & Ignite club in St Peter’s Way closed on October 19, 2011 after Nabila Nanfuka, aged 22, and Laurene-Danielle Jackson, aged 19, suffered fatal injuries during a crush inside the club.

Both the police investigation into the incident and one carried out by Northampton Borough Council have now completed.

Det Insp Louise Hemmingway from Northamptonshire Police said: “The investigation into the tragic incident at Lava & Ignite is now complete and a file of evidence has been submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service.”

The leader of Northampton Borough Council, Councillor David Mackintosh (Con, Rectory Farm) added: “Northampton Borough Council’s Health and Safety investigation into the sad incident at Lava & Ignite is now complete and we will be passing our file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service by early next week at the latest.

“Unlike the police, we have no powers to compel people to respond to our requests to interview them and so gathering the best evidence has taken a little longer than we would have liked.

“However we are now confident that the file we are providing to the Crown Prosecution Service is ready for consideration.”

The ‘Wickedest Wickedest’ dance music night at Lava & Ignite saw clubbers travel to Northampton from London, Leicester, Coventry, Nottingham, Loughborough, Middlesex, Cambridge, Hertfordshire, Portsmouth, Bradford and Birmingham.

Nabila,a student from Neasden, North London, died at Northampton General Hospital after being crushed inside the club. She had been studying leisure and tourism at The University of Northampton.

Laurene-Danielle,from Shepherd’s Bush in London, died at Leicester Glenfield Hospital on Sunday, November 6.

The pair were crushed on a stairwell in the club as hundreds of people rushed to the exits.

To date, more than 1,000 witnesses have been interviewed by the police.

The Lava & Ignite building has since been converted into a gym.
