Traffic police are to crackdown on seven high-speed ‘red routes’ across Northamptonshire, after bikers were clocked doing more than 120mph.

Northamptonshire Police is to run a motorbike safety operation over the next few weeks, aimed at catching speeding bikers and educating riders about the dangers they face when they are out on their bikes.

In a recent speed enforcement operation, three motorcyclists were clocked travelling at speeds of 91, 96 and 121 respectively.

Across Northamptonshire, between January 2010 and December 2012, there were 424 serious injury collisions involving motorcyclists on the roads.

Of those, seven were fatal crashes and 179 involved serious injuries.

As part of the crackdown, officers are to target seven so-called motorbike ‘red routes’ where high numbers of serious collisions have taken place over recent months.

The red routes are:

A361 - Daventry to Banbury

A508 - Northampton to Brixworth

A509 - Wellingborough to Bozeat

A45 - Mereway to Sixfields

A5 - Towcester to Weedon

427 - Oundle to Corby

B645 - Rushden to Kimbolton

Police teams will also run three Bikesafe events, planned for this month, September and October, offering expert advice and guidance on how to stay safe while out and about.

Specialists Operations Inspector Jen Helm said: “This operation, along with the Bikesafe courses, will benefit all road users and help us achieve our primary aim of reducing incidents of serious or fatal road traffic collisions.”
