Waste collection changes to limit how much Northampton households can put out

Households will be limited to putting two bags of rubbish out each week when changes to collections are introduced next month.

The changes will affect 22,000 households in Northampton that currently have a weekly ‘black’ refuse sack collection rather than a wheelie bin.

A spokesman for Northampton Borough Council said: “From September 16, refuse will be collected in new green sacks.

“Every household will be limited to a maximum of two green sacks per household each week and no other type of sack will be collected by the crews.

“The change is part of Northampton’s commitment to recycling more and sending less waste to landfill.”

Leaflets detailing the changes are being sent out this month and a six-month supply of green sacks will be delivered to households during the first week of September with a leaflet explaining how people can recycle more.

Over the last 10 years the town has increased the amount it recycles, from 9,753 tonnes in 2003/4 to 34,677 tonnes in 2011/12 – an increase of more than 250 per cent.

The introduction of kerbside recycling in 2004 made it easier for households to recycle more.

Since then the council has increased the types of recycling it collects.

A food waste collection was introduced in 2012.

Households with wheelie bins are not affected by the changes.
