The county’s cricket team will be recognised for their one-day heroics with a parade and a civic reception, it has been revealed this evening.
Northamptonshire Steelbacks crowned an astonishing t20 campaign by lifting the Friends Life t20 trophy on Saturday night at Edgbaston.
This evening it has been confirmed a victory parade will take place on Saturday, September 28, in Northampton.
The parade will conclude with a civic reception at The Guildhall.
Saturday’s victory marks the Steelbacks’ first major title in 21 years.
Tonight, Northampton Borough Council confirmed it is “working with the Steelbacks” to finalise plans for an open top bus victory tour through the town for the new champions.
Councillor David Mackintosh, leader of the council, said: “This weekend the whole town got behind the Steelbacks as they overcame both Essex and Surrey to win the t20 final. In less than ideal conditions the team showed just why they are enjoying such a fantastic season.
“This year has been great for our town, especially for our sports teams. To see our town and county trending worldwide on Twitter just goes to show how success can put Northampton on the map.
“And, there is a good chance we may see more success and silverware at The County Ground before the end of the season.
“We have been working hard to arrange a date with the Steelbacks so they can parade the cup and share the victory with everyone who couldn’t make it to Edgbaston.
“But with a number of important matches coming up, we felt it would be best to wait until the end of the season so the players can focus on keeping the momentum going.”
Full details of the civic reception, open top bus victory tour route and timetable will be announced later.
Martin Lawrence, Northants Cricket chairmen, today said: “In my last year as chairman nothing has given me greater pleasure and excitement than watching our Steelbacks lift the t20 trophy at Edgbaston.
“In the last twelve months we have gone through enormous changes in personnel affecting all aspects of this fine club.
“I have been greatly encouraged by the speed and enthusiasm with which a new chief executive, new coach and two new captains have been embraced by the club and been able to produce such positive results in all forms of the game.”
