The county’s first combined police and fire station has opened today.

The new facility at Thrapston Fire Station is another development in the continuing collaboration between Northamptonshire Police and Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue, following talk of a “blue light merger” from Police & Crime Commissioner Adam Simmonds earlier this year.

A plaque was unveiled by Chief Fire Officer Martyn Emberson and Chief Constable Adrian Lee, along with Crew Manager Bob Johnson and Sergeant Andy Maher.

Mr Simmonds said: “This is an exciting move for the blue light services in Northamptonshire, bringing together operational police officers and firefighters under the same roof for the first time.

“We know that people want to see their emergency services working closer together and this is just one of a number of areas where we are working to jointly improve the safety of our communities.”

Sgt Maher said: “Our new office at the fire station in High Street means we are in an even more central location, providing good access to the community. We are really pleased to be based here and to be the first local policing team to work alongside our fire service colleagues in the same location.”

Watch manager Mick Witten said: “The opportunity to work more closely with our police colleagues is a very positive step. With both services working out of one location we can train together and develop closer working relationships, which will be bring added improvements in the way we deliver our services.”

When the proposed “merger” was announced the idea drew criticisms from the Police Federation, politicians at Northamptonshire County Council and Tory MPs, included Northampton South MP Brian Binley, who claimed Mr Simmonds was “trying to take over the world”.
