Cobblers loan siging Emyr Huws says he has been told to ‘express himself’ during his three-month stint at Sixfields.
The Manchester City midfielder signed for Town on Wednesday evening, and has now met up with his new team-mates for the first time.
The 19-year-old Welshman has come south with a reputation for being one to watch for the future, and he is determined to take his chance to make his mark in senior football.
Huws has been captain of the City Under-21 team this season, and played in their 1-1 draw with Wolves on Tuesday night at the Etihad Stadium.
But now he is fully focused on life at the slightly less glamorous Sixfields, and Saturday’s visit of Exeter City in npower League Two - a match that will see Huws make his Football League debut.
“I am happy to be here,” said the Wales Under-19 international.
“It is a good opportunity for me, and hopefully I can help the team win games, which is what I am here to do.”
Asked what the coaching staff at City had told him to do during his stint with the Cobblers, Huws told www.ntfc.co.uk: “They have said for me to come to Northampton and express myself, to enjoy my football and hopefully develop.
“It will be my first experience of first team football, and I’m looking forward to it.”
Huws has been with Manchester City since he was 14, having started his career at Swansea City.
He is described as a box-to-box midfielder who is a strong tackler and also has an eye for a goal.
Huws, whose loan spell at Sixfields will run until January 5, is set to go straight into the starting line-up to face the Grecians, with the youngster being brought in to bolster the team following the injuries to Ben Harding and Luke Guttridge.
“If I am picked it will be a league debut and it will be a big game for me, but I am looking forward to it,” said Huws, who revealed he will be moving down to stay ‘with a few of the other lads’ in a hotel while on loan at Town.
“Once or twice I have played in front of big crowds, but this will be a little bit different.
“I do get nervous before games, but once I get on the pitch it’s no problem.”
“I just have to be ready and if the manager picks me then I’ll enjoy it.”
