Police hoping for a message in a bottle

A ‘message in a bottle’ scheme to help police and paramedics identify the medical needs of casualties more quickly has been rolled out across Collingtree.

Police introduced the scheme to the area on Tuesday and are encouraging people who have medical conditions, as well as the elderly and vulnerable, to complete a form and place it in a specially designed bottle.

The bottle is then put in the fridge, while a sticker is displayed on the fridge door to alert the emergency services.

The form lists the details of their preferred point of contact and basic personal and medical details and aims to ensure valuable time is not lost.

PCSO Mary-Anne Stretton, who has been leading the project, said: “In an emergency, gaining information about a person’s needs or medical requirements is essential to any member of the emergency services who first arrives at a scene.

“The message in a bottle scheme provides clear, quick, factual information about the person, providing clear directions about their immediate requirements.

“The scheme has already been well received in Great Houghton and Hardingstone, and Collingtree residents were equally pleased to learn about this potential life saving scheme.”
