A battle on two fronts

Spare a thought for The Mack who is in the thick of battle with the heritage lot on two fronts at the moment. Firstly, there’s the lovely Sekhemkha who’d spent the past 140 of her 4,500 years on Earth tucked away, anonymously in Northampton Museum, presumably muttering to herself: “If only they’d get me out front, everyone will see I’m worth a beautiful £2million”.

The Mack, who’s keen for an early sale, has been portrayed as, if not quite the town’s resident Philistine, certainly something near it, while some heritage buffs fear the museum will be expelled from the Musuems Association for selling her off.

Things got worse this week when the Battle of Northampton battlefield site row took a new turn. The experts say this, by the way, is a “historically significant” site (even though there hasn’t been much done to mark that significance for the past 550 years). We digress. A blog was duly published on some prominent heritage websites claiming The Mack had sent an email which “submitted a request to English Heritage to have the boundary of the battlefield moved so the proposed development would fall outside the protected area”.

The Guildhall emphatically denied any such (ludicrous) request yesterday.

Indeed they went as far as getting it removed from the original website, all of which comes as a blessed relief to Aufona.

But for those who missed it, the final paragraph swipe suggests just how het up the military historians and
Egyptologists have become, claiming The Mack and the council are already in the “Heritage Sin Bin” over a “bungled” attempt to sell off Sekhemkha, adding that “further debacle over attempts to develop the battlefield site is likely to see them “Red Carded” and heading for an early bath; perhaps at the next local elections”.

DID WE MISS IT, PAUL?

Hardly pausing for breath, would-be Lib Dem PCC @Paul4Police Varnsverry tweeted last week: “Busy day! Media launch of manifesto”

Launch? Really? We received an email for your manifesto, Paul, but launch?
