Cobblers fans enjoy the second best value season ticket in the English leagues but one of the most expensive days out, according to an annual survey about the price of watching the beautiful game.

The results of the BBC Sport Price of Football study have been released today and show Northampton Town’s cheapest season ticket, costing £199, is the second lowest-priced in any of the top five divisions.

Only League One’s Hartlepool United offer a cheaper ticket, at £155, while League Two stablemates Bradford City and Conference Premier teams Nuneaton Town and Hyde also sell a ticket for £199.

However, the survey also ranked the Cobblers as the fourth most expensive day out in League Two at £27 a match.

Hungry and thirsty fans have to pay £3 for a pie and £2 for a cup of tea at Sixfields, up 20p each from last year.

Only Gillingham (£ 28.90), Southend United (£ 28.30) and Oxford United (£27.60) offer a more expensive day out in the Football League’s basement division, the survey says.

The cheapest season ticket at Sixfields costs £199 for 23 league games, and cup games can be purchased for an extra £50.

The most expensive season ticket is £380, the cheapest match-day ticket is £19 and the most expensive match-day ticket is £20.

Gareth Willsher, head of media at Northampton Town, said: “We work hard to strike a balance between generating enough money to be competitive on the field while offering the best value for money we can. We always strive hard to look after season ticket holders.

“What the survey doesn’t show is anything we do with local schools and groups. We have hundreds at each game and offer them a special experience such as walking out with the players or taking a penalty on the pitch. Plus we have heavily discounted tickets for groups.”

The study ranks each club on eight costs – cheapest season ticket; most expensive season ticket; cheapest match-day ticket; most expensive match-day ticket; cheapest day out; cost of a programme; cost of a pie and cost of a cup of tea.

It showed the ever-increasing price of watching football in the English leagues, as the average price of the cheapest matchday ticket has risen from £19.01 to £21.24.

It looks at prices for 166 clubs in 10 divisions across British football, including the Conference Premier and Women’s Super League.
