Die-hard Dirty Dancing fans had the time of their lives at a new concert featuring all of the film’s favourite hits.
A Night Of Dirty Dancing was performed at the Derngate theatre last Thursday night infront of an enthusiastic crowd.
The concert, which featured performers from the West End, celebrated the movie soundtrack with hits including Big Girls Don’t Cry, Hey Baby, Wipeout, Do You Love Me, Be My Baby, Hungry Eyes and, of course, the Oscar-winning (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life.
For hardcore fans of the film, like myself, the night was everything we could have asked for and had the audience up on their feet, dancing and singing along to their favourite hits.
The show followed the plot of the film through the music and mirrored the dances seen on the screen.
It was plain to see that the majority of the audience remembered the movie word for word and the music took them on a trip back to the summer of ‘63, to relive Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey’s sizzling performance in the ultimate coming of age romance.
The show’s performers paid tribute to the late Patrick Swayze, who died three years ago, with renditions of the song he helped write for Dirty Dancing, She’s Like the Wind, Unchained Melody which links with his performance in Ghost and Mad World, the soundtrack to the movie Donnie Darko in which he performed.
The all-singing and all-dancing cast also paid homage to movies including Footloose and Flashdance, which again brought the mostly-female crowd to their feet.
The performers made a great effort to help the crowd feel part of the show, asking them to sing and dance along, and at points making their way into the audience themselves.
Many of the obliging crowd did not sit down until the final curtain, myself included.
This show has almost everything in the way of music and dancing from the hit film that fans could ask for.
The only thing I would say was missing from the performance was when Johnny takes Baby into his arms for the reknowned breath-taking dance lift at the end of the film.
