Jim Mallinder has confirmed that Christian Day has had an operation on his injured ankle and will be out for ‘a number of weeks’.

Day returned to action last Saturday after six weeks on the sidelines, but was forced off just 11 minutes into his comeback in the 31-30 LV= Cup defeat to Harlequins.

Mallinder later confirmed the lock had suffered a recurrence of the ankle problem picked up against Wasps on September 28.

And Day has since gone under the knife, meaning he is set to miss a number of vital upcoming games.

“Unfortunately, he’s had a recurrence of the injury he did previously,” said Mallinder. “He’s had an operation and will be out for a number of weeks.”

Day’s absence is a blow for Saints as they prepare for Sunday’s LV= Cup showdown with Newport-Gwent Dragons.

It’s a game Mallinder is desperate for his side to win as they aim to end their four-match losing run and get back into form ahead of a big six weeks in the Premiership and Heineken Cup.

“It’s never easy to go down to Wales, they’re proud and they’ll play hard,” said the Saints boss.

“We want to go down there, perform well and work on some of the things that haven’t been working for us in recent weeks.

“We think if we can get that happening we’ll win the game and that will set us up nicely for the next couple of weeks.”
