The Cobblers have confirmed the signing of former captain Clarke Carlisle on a loan deal from York City until January.

Carlisle lined up for the Minstermen in the 1-1 draw between the two sides at Bootham Crescent on November 6.

And he has now been reunited with the team whose Football League survival he played a big part in maintaining last season when he was on loan from Burnley.

The central defender was offered a contract at Sixfields over the summer but hoped at that stage to concentrate on a career in the media.

But he found his options in that field limited and, with the offer from Northampton having expired, he signed for York, who have now loaned him back to his former club.

Carlisle will come into the matchday squad for the visit of Morecambe to Sixfields on Tuesday (7.45pm kick-off).

“I am absolutely delighted to have Clarke back on board,” said boss Aidy Boothroyd.

“He was a huge part of the squad that stayed up last season. I am really pleased he has agreed to come here and to help us build on the good work we started last season and have carried on so far this season.

“Clarke is exactly who we need right now, he is exactly the right type of person and the right type of player.

“I am sure he will form a successful partnership with Kelvin Langmead, who I think has been outstanding so far this season.

“Those two know each other from last season and it is great to have them reunited.”
