The senior and masters ladies teams from Rugby & Northampton both finished in exactly the same position as they did last year in the opening race of the Midland Women’s Cross Country League .
The four-mile course at Leamington’s Newbold Comyn saw the seniors finish in 13th place and were led home by junior Emily Waugh. The 19-year-old covered the course in 29 mins 14 secs to cross the line in 47th spot.
Chasing her all the way to the finish with an exceptional run was 17-year-old Sarah Bennett in her first cross country against senior athletes.
She finished just 12 seconds behind Waugh in 50th position.
Veteran Daisy Melville completed the team with 30.23 for 64th and she led home the Masters squad, which finished in fourth place.
Joining her in that team were first time veteran Jane Westley (69th in 30.44) and the reigning masters club champion Alison Cooper (90th in 31.30).
Also turning out for the club were Louise Thompson in 31.44 for 96th and Sue Lawrence (140th in 33.52).
Waugh claims sixth as R&N take second spot
Emily Waugh followed up her Midland Women’s League race by leading the R&N team to second place in the Midland Counties five-mile Cross Country Championship.
Waugh finished in sixth spot in the event held at Wolverhampton’s Aldersley Stadium when she recorded 34 mins 59 secs.
Just one place behind veteran Daisy Melville was timed at 35.36 and the quartet was completed by Alison Cooper (12th in 36.45) and Angela Copson ( 14th in 37.19 ) for well earned silver medals.
Back up was also provided by Kate Williams in 15th with 37.26 , along with Sue Lawrence (18th in 39.44) and Tricia Garner (26th in 46.20).
