The Cobblers have signed Swindon Town right-back Chris Smith on loan up to and including January 1.
The 22-year-old Smith joined Swindon after winning the Samsung ‘Win A Pro Contract’ competition and made his Robins debut at the end of last season against Bradford City.
Due to the form of a number of players at the County Ground he has found his chances limited this season and enjoyed a loan spell at Swindon Supermarine earlier this season.
Boss Aidy Boothroyd said the addition of Smith was made with an eye on helping the club through a busy December.
“Chris is here to give us the option of an extra defender through a busy period,” he said.
“With the loan window closing and injuries to John Johnson and David Artell, I felt we needed another defender in the squad to see us through a hectic run of games.
“We have seven games coming up in a period with the loan window closed and it is about making sure we are well equipped to deal with that period, not leaving ourselves short.”
Smith is the second right-back the club has on loan, joining Danny East from Hull City.
Johnson underwent a second surgery of the season on his injured knee and is expected to be out until the New Year.
