A 78ft ice rink in Northampton town centre which will form part of the Christmas celebrations has been opened to the public.

Councillor David Mackintosh, leader of Northampton Borough Council and Councillor Brandon Eldred, cabinet member for community engagement, were part of the first group of people to put their skates on.

Councillor Mackintosh said: “It is a really brilliant attraction for the town centre and will hopefully increase footfall.

“It is for all ages of people and parents can bring their children and then have a coffee or look round the shops. Hopefully it cab be an annual feature.”

Councillor Eldred said: “It is a great thing to get for the town and it was a really quick turnaround. Hopefully it will provide a lift to the local economy.”

Prices for the ice rink are £7.50 an hour or £25 for a family ticket. Ice skates are provided and there is no need to book in advance. The rink will remain in the town until January 8.

The rink will be open from noon to 8pm weekdays and 10.30am to 8pm on weekends and school holidays.
